Types Of Fibre Optic Cable
The types of Fibre Optic cable. In my earlier article I have discussed about Fibre Optic Cable. Now we shall be discussing about the types of Fibre Optic Cables.
The types of Fibre Optic Cables are classified into three types. They are as follows.
- Plastic Core and Cladding Fibre Optic Cable
- Glass Core with Plastic Cladding also known as PCS Fibre or Plastic – Clad Silica Fibre Optic Cable
- Glass Core and Glass Cladding also known as SCS Fibre or Silica-Clad Silica Fibre Optic Cable

01) Plastic Core and Cladding:-
The first type of fibre optic cable is Plastic Core and cladding. As we discussed earlier Fibre may be plastic or glass. Plastic Fibre has more advantages than glass fibre. Plastic fibre is more flexible and rugged than glass and it is easy to install also. The plastic Core and cladding fibre is capable of withstanding more stress and are less expensive.
The plastic fibre weigh less than the glass fibre, it is about 60 % less weight than the glass fibre. The characteristic of plastic core and cladding is high attenuation. But the disadvantage of plastic core and cladding fibre is that they don’t propagate light as efficiently as glass fibre. Plastic fibre is mostly used in large complexes or in single buildings.
02) Glass Core with Plastic Cladding or Plastic Clad Silica or PCS:-
The second type of fibre optic cable is Glass Core with Plastic cladding. This fibre optic cable is also termed as PCS fibre or plastic clad silica. The glass core with plastic cladding has a characteristic of low attenuation. The glass core with plastic cladding is less attracted to radiation and hence used mostly in Military applications.
03) Glass Core and Glass Cladding or Silica Clad Silica or SCS:-
The third type of fibre optic cable is Glass Core and Glass Cladding. This is also known as SCS fibre or Silica clad silica. This Fibre optic cable has the best propagation characteristic and it is easy to terminate than the Glass core with plastic cladding fibre optic cable. But very unfortunately this fibre is more prone to attenuation when exposed to radiation.
